Facebook is getting bigger and bigger. Worldwide as well as in India. I have seen most of my friends moved to facebook and using it regularly. Couple of reasons using FB over orkut are - its more 'lively' and facebook apps. There are several apps and games to keep you linked to your and friends profile. One of the most popular app is Farmville.

Its a most popular social game having more than 8 million unique users. I started playing Farmville around 2 months back. Prior to that it was Mafia Wars which brought me to facebook. In last couple of months playing regularly, I have made more than 1 lakh exp points. Fortunately, or unfortunately, I can't just enjoy things. I need quantification, evaluation and perfection in whatever I do. Typical Virgo :) Hence, in Farmville also, I worked more on playing strategies to maximize exp and coins.

I am not going to explain how to play Farmville here. If you already know, great !! otherwise you can try it yourself. If you are a farmer and have searched net for Farmville guide, you might have came across many. What I am sharing here is a crop plantation calculation sheet.

This sheet requires 3 inputs: your current level, mode of play and no. of hours you’ll be visiting your farm again. And this sheet will give you crop for maximum coins and maximum experience. Mode of play is 1 for no breaks and 2 for with breaks. Instead of me explaining that here, I suggest you to try it out on the sheet directly. For detail calculations, you can refer second sheet.

Planning for a Next Step !!!

Change is the only constant thing in life. I am also planning for one in terms of career.

Till now, it is going really well. I have carefully planned my short term and long term goals in terms of education, career and was lucky enough to achieve them. In last 4.5 years I have learned so many things. I enjoyed taking responsibilities, creating processes, defining & executing steps and leading people. Now I believe its time to define the next step for my own career.
There are two alternatives a) product manager - take challenge and create new products rather than just getting it done OR b) consultancy - help others to achieve their goals. At this moment, both the roles seem very interesting and challenging. But its very difficult to get both at once. Hence I have to choose one of them. The analysis process has already begun. Soon I’ll be ready with the result.

If anyone from Indiagames HR is reading this post, don't worry. Its not about any other job offer :)

Just two more days .. And 2009 will end. A mixed year for me with some good / bad memories on personal, professional, social fronts.

Here is the year summary from my side ...

First about blogging : Reading other's blog, there was an improvement definitely but pretty bad year for my blogging venture. Just lost track and passion I had. But 2010 will definitely be like that .. I promise :)

MandY holding is doing well :) but not great. I made as well as lost some good calls. Won some by luck and lost some BIG ones as well. But overall, it gave me a good learning year. From coming financial year I'll definitely able to make use of these concepts. The target for coming year is 50% gain from april 2010 to 2011. I think I'll be able to achieve that. Let's see..

On personal part, had some kaande pohe programs by now and hope will be able to have shaadi ka laddu in 2011 :)

Got new blackberry this month and I can feel great improvement in my productivity. I am active 24x7 now professionally on personal front as well. Always connected on mail, messenger and a great push mail support. Apart from these I learned lot of new things and will continue to do so in future .. Had some great ideas but didn't get time to work on most of them. They all are due next year ..

Hello frnds ... remember me ? Was totally busy in my day to day routine work, job and personal things.

In last couple of months so many things happened. There was some great moments in personal life, family matters. Professional life gave increassed pressure but provided stability. That was much needed in current environment. MandY Holdings lost 40% of its capital due to my ignorance and over confidence.

Overall a mixed bag of experiences ... but thats life .. and I am enjoying it :)

One more important thing .... got a blackberry from office. First time I shifted from windows touch screen phones to a non touch screen phone. Configured all my personal professional mail accounts and IMs on that. I'll be posting another separate post on that experience :)

Ending this small status update .. now I'll be regular here as I was before :)

10 tips for shoe-throwing

This is with regard to the shoe-throwing incident involving a journalist (the accused) and a senior minister ( the victim). It is not as simple as it seems, to throw a shoe at a politician you hate (Question: Are there any politicians you don't hate?). You need to prepare early in life. But here are some tips, not necessarily in order of importance.

1) Practice for some days before undertaking your mission, preferably with your wife's/girlfriend's shoe.

2) Sit as close as possible to the target on the day of the incident.

3) Keep a spare shoe, in case the first misses the target (anyway we all wear two shoes).

4) Exercise for at least a month before D-Day. You need to look perfectly fit. No one likes a clumsy shoe-thrower.

5) Ensure the shoes you are wearing (and intend to throw) are not with laces. You cannot be struggling at the last minute trying to unlace your shoes.

6) Train early in life to be a journalist, preferably a political reporter, so that you can attend press conferences addressed by politicians.

7) Polish your shoes well before the attack. So, if your shoe misses the target, the politician could at least pass out with the strong smell of polish mixed with the stink of the streets.

8) Have a hearty meal a short time before the incident. You can never tell how many hours you will be detained in a stinking prison cell, and whether you will be sentenced to death later.

9) Don't tell the world about your plan. Keep it top secret.

10) Most important: Select a proper, old shoe, preferably a woman's high-heeled shoe. Remember, the purpose is to cause maximum damage.

11) Hey, did I not say 10 tips? Well, you may not like one of them, so here's the final one. Aim a little below the head, as your target will duck.

Task manager for Human Brain

Like a computer, a human brain is capable of doing several things at once. But our task manager is not as efficient as computer's task manager. Several times positive/negative outcome of one process affects another even though they are not related.

It would be great if we get a better, well managed, bug free task manager where we can simply right click and minimize or end any process.With this, a bad day in office won't affect your personal life or a girl friend's phone call won't affect your day to day work.

Hopefully GOD will install it in next release.

Tough time ahead for MandY Holdings - Department D

Effective from March 09, SEBI increased lot sizes by almost 4 times, hence the margin in same proportion. With a small capital of 1.3 Lakhs we were able to buy/short two lots at once with worst case averaging limit of 4-5 lots. But now, that option is no longer available. Either we need to increase our capital to 4-5 lakhs or increase our expertise to do more correct analysis and risk evaluation. The first option is very difficult hence we are proceeding with the second one. Alternatively, there is an option of using department D when we predict bullish short term trend. We can buy few shares which we can average instead of taking risk of full lot. But in case of short sell, we have to take risk. Probably, SEBI also wants the same thing - more equity traders (investors) than f&o (traders).

We love challenges, we'll come out with solution and move ahead.

To our current and future aspirant shareholders, we are happy to announce that we did our first trade with new lots today. Bought reliance lot at 1264 and sold at 1280 earning 4800 rs. Although it reached intra-day high of 1297 due to heavy buying in last 15 minutes, we are happy with our small first gain. MandY Holdings has earned 17% profit on the investment of Rs. 1,20,000 in 6 weeks time.

We are currently in learning phase hence the 7 % gain in one month is very good.

One major loss faced was from RNRL lot. I couldn't guess the price movement due to covering hence lost 10K plus in that deal. Otherwise I could have had more than 15% monthly gain. After that, faced biggest tension when I short sold 5 Nifty lots with 2850 average price and it reached 2950 on 14th Feb (Happy Valentine day). I was 25,000 down and my entire investment was locked hence there was no scope for averaging. I was pretty sure that market will come down by Feb end at least. Thankfully, budget did the magic and I baught back 4 lots with 7,600 rs. gain. Still holding short one lot.

The overall future for MandY holding is positive. Till now 7 calls were positive and 2 negative. Two more are yet to be realized. Assuming 50-50 in that, 72% correct calls is a good sign for my research and intelligence(or pure luck).

Currently, we are investing only in Department D, hence hence we can have gains (and looses) irrespective of market going up or down. Point to note, almost all gains are from short sell and I lost heavily in two buy trades. We'll publish our next balance sheet by march end, by which we are expecting 25% profit.

Department E has invested a small amount rs. 6,150 in HCL Technologies. Currently the stock value is 109 rs. with 670 rs loss. But this investment is made with a target of 500 rs share value in 3-4 years. No plans to invest in equities before Q1-09.

Department Zero predicts Sensex will remain in 8500 to 10000 range. If it falls below 8500, it may drop down to 7000. Indian market will see some stability after September and start recovery from 2010.

Orkut Speed Issue

From last few months I am experiencing poor performance on Orkut. Surprisingly, the performance is far better on Chrome than on firefox or IE. I accept chrome is slightly faster than firefox 3.1 but speed difference is considerable on Orkut.

Is anyone else getting same results ? Has google started dirty tricks to push their chrome browser ?

Feeling the Market Heat !!!!

Market went 283 points up today with nifty jumped 79 points. On friday I short sold Nifty at 2814 under the feeling that market will come down. That too with little over confidence ... 3 lots i.e. 150 shares :)

Today, the first time, I experienced the real heat of market. Still managed to keep my head cool and short another 2 lots at 2914 with reserved funds of MandY Holding. Lets see whether my call is correct or not. Currently I am 250 shares short at average price 2852.

Yesterday, I experienced the worst ever effect of Pink Slips. Our company laid off 40 people from various departments. We tried our best but couldn't keep ourselves away from global slowdown. Fortunately, even during booming time, we never hired people like other companies hence the effect was small. But loosing job all of a sudden is not easy for anyone.

All of a sudden the company atmosphere changed from every day's joyful culture to a silent one. Fortunately, there was no layoff from my team. Being a Team Leader, I was encouraging my team members and other employees but at the same time there was a fear of loosing my own job as well. Fortunately nothing like that happened. I am still on Indiagames payroll.

In the evening I got a call from my sister, who recently joined Mastek after completing her engineering. Her company put 12% of their workforce on virtual bench. Virtual bench means an employee gets a full year leave and salary is reduced to 20%. My sister was part of that.

Thinking positively, I believe its a time for consolidation. One must evaluate himself. Consider this downturn as opportunity than problem and find your own path. In the booming time every idea is great, every one is genius. But as you can see now, most of them failed. One who can think of great idea in current time is great. hence believe on yourself, prove yourself and let others follow you.

Remembering Auschwitz

Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. 27 January 1945, 63 years before, Soviets troops entered the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz and liberated remaining 7,000 people. During the existence of Auschwitz, the SS camp authorities killed nearly one million Jews from across Europe. Other victims included approximately 74,000 Poles, approximately 21,000 Roma (Gypsies), and approximately 15,000 Soviet prisoners of war.

Hitler believed in Aryan superiority and hence wanted to remove all inferior people out of the society. In the starting days of War, Jews were separated from normal society into special areas called - ghettos. Later on they're forced into labour and concentration camp.

The entrance to Auschwitz was marked with the sign “Arbeit Macht Frei”, or “work makes (one) free”. When german defeat becomes inevitable, nazi regime devised Final Solution to kill all Jews. They ruthlessly killed women, children and elderly people by selection because they were not fit for work first by sending them to gas chambers. Those who were capable of work were forced to work for war efforts till they die by hunger and diseases. The process holocaust killed over 6 million jews across Europe.

Everyone in the world knows this history. Still genocides are happening. People are still dividing each other based on color, language, caste, religion, nationality etc. God has given us the power of intelligence. When we'll learn such simple things from history ?

Studying is integral part of my life. I want to be a student throughout my life. The knowledge in this world is infinite and unfortunately I have finite time. Hence I try my best to utilize it properly to maximize gains. I have interest in almost every subject in this world. Thankfully god has given me intellect, analyzing power and fast learning abilities which allow me to gain knowledge from many subjects.

Now a days I am taking lot of interest in studying corporate strategy, HR, team management, leadership, finance etc. I am studying them at once and trying to relate one another. At the same time current news are giving me lot of situations to apply the fundamentals I am reading. Also getting lot of feedback from my day to day work, business strategies, technical, R&D part. Right from my engineering days I am a good programmer. But I have never restricted myself to one particular programming language. I am more interested in gathering requirements and finding solution using tools I have or create the tools I require. This gives me great ability analyze given situation and design solution if any. And good grasp on mathematics, algorithms and data structures gives me power to optimize these solutions.

It looks like I am writing my resume .. or giving HR interview ... I am not .. I am just writing my evaluation as a learner.

Speed, in depth analysis and out of box thinking are my strongest abilities. But at the same time, I lack long term view of any solution. I find it too complex to evaluate any solution over long period as I run out of memory when I consider minute details of the solution over long period. And without considering those details, I can not evaluate any solution. Thinking in short term also shows lack of patience. Unfortunately I have this problem.

Secondly, I don't believe on anyone - no person, no theory, not even myself. I evaluate everything. I am very happy when I prove something different than existing .. when I prove something wrong .. including my own principles .. myself.

Lot of things to write ... may be I'll have part II of this post later ... ... ... have lot of things to do :)

We are expanding. Added a new vertical to MandY Holdings. Now we have a separate 'Department D' handling derivatives and F&O.

It took me little longer time (10 complete days) to understand the derivatives concept - trading on index instead of actual stock. Its interesting but I still feel it has no meaning. Its just a concept derived to earn or loose money. But it can be a good tool to earn and loose large sum of money quickly with less investment.

As I quoted in my previous post, RIL is waving in the range of 1100 to 1400. For last 3 days it was increasing and touched 1385 level. Also, the market was moving up for last 3-4 days without any supporting good news. I thought this is the level from which RIL will come down below 1300 range. Short sold RIL - 75 shares lot yesterday at 1345. By the day end it zoomed up till 1380 raising some tension, but I was quite sure it will come down, hence I carried over by keeping margin.

Today morning market came down as expected, RIL went down till 1320. In the afternoon, Satyam fraud news came out and market crashed. RIL went down to 1200. It is a very bad news for the business but proved great one for me. I Instantly earned ~10K rs (~30% gain) in one day for the investment of 32000 (for margin). Overall my entry in the derivative domain was successful.

Mandy Holding kicked off well. Expansion is also giving good profit. We have structured ourselves into following departments:

* Department E : Dealing with Equities
* Department D : Dealing with Derivatives
* Department ZERO : Dealing with Equity Research - The name signifies it wont generate any revenue by its own but it can increase the value of any other if coupled appropriately.

This is just a beginning. We are Hiring now !!!! But ... come with your own money :) its recession time after all :D

Please don't take everything seriously ... Just kidding ... this is just my part time business. I make and sell games for living for which my company pays me a fix salary of 7 rs. per minute plus bonus. And I am currently very happy with that.

My First Trade !!!!!!

Bought RIL 3 stocks for 1257 and sold at 1293 gaining 108 rs. The gain is not much ... just 3 % but its my first ever trade using my own DMAT account :) This stock is swinging between 1050 to 1350 range in last two months. Some analysts are predicting it to go below 1000. I see an opportunity to gain some money in that swinging range. Lets see ...

Now bought 10 stocks of UTV at 269.5 . Hope Ronny and team will pull the share up. Disney also has significant stake in the company.

My Shopping Spree

Who says men can not shop ? After listening lots of taanebaaji from my mother and sister, I decided to show off my shopping skills. I selected Big Bazaar in Raghuleela mall at Vashi .. next to my office.

With the courage of Shreeshant facing Brett Lee's bawling attack on Austrelian pitch, I straight way headed to grocery section. Took a trolly and started roaming around reading names and rates. I felt little confident after reading the names and called mom. Asked her to tell me what items I should bring. She was it surprised when she heard I am in mall for shopping. She started the list .. mug ardha kilo, masur, udid daal pav kilo, chavali ek kilo, vaal changale astil tar ek kilo etc. etc. etc. Suddenly the items I saw few minutes ago started looking unfamiliar to me :) I double checked the section I was standing in. Tried doing some R&D but didn't work.

Mom was firing requests one after the other. After 5-6 minutes, I was about to give up. Suddenly I saw one kaku - aged 50-52 shopping next to me. She was looking at me for last 2-3 minutes. I gave my GREAT SMILE (pitty) with my chinese eyes (michmiche dole), innocent looks (bavlat aani buddhu chehraa) and dimples (galache khadde). Then things started moving smoothly. Kaku found all items my mom requested .. after that my part was just to pull the trally. The toughest section in question paper was solved :)
Then there was one more confusion in soaps section. I found it extremely difficult to classify soap bar used to wash cloths and utensils. All the names were looking similar. Finally I found the correct ones by recollecting their advertisements. (Prashant Damle : bayko geli maheri, kaam kari pitambari etc.)

Some unanswered questions about Traditions

Today I was returning from my office. Deonar abattoir is on my way. For last one week there is traffic jam because of Bakri Eid. Every evening I see vehicles carrying male goats - bakras. Today I saw one family - a man with his 6-8 yrs old child carrying a bakra in a rickshaw. Generally these animals are not used to with traffic, traveling in vehicles, noises etc. In this auto, the kid was feeding some fresh leaves to the goat and goat was eating it. Both were very much gelled and comfortable with each other. The kid was hugging goat, loving him and the animal was enjoying his company too.

Tomorrow is Bakri Eid and that family is going to kill that animal. Most of the time not in just one single shot .. the animal is going to experience slow painful death - halaal . Does that small kid or that animal aware of it ? If yes, can they have same feeling for each other which they are having now ?

I don't want to make comment on anyone's religion or tradition. But why any GOD will be pleased with any form of kurbani ? Afterall, all living beings are his children only.

Its very difficult to miss SaReGaMaPa Little Champs program if you are a Zee marathi viewer. This program is simply amazing. Its far better than the standard reality shows and talent hunt competitions. The performances by little kids are just too good. I watch it every week without fail. I have downloaded song mp3s and watched several youtube videos.

Yesterday I was analyzing my blog visitors trend using google analytics. I found that I am getting some visitors because of some SaReGaMaPa participant names used in my blog post. If people are searching for SaReGaMaPa videos, let me share them here. I'll post embedded youtube videos here classified by participants. Main ones which I like are Prathamesh Laghate, Mugdha Vaishampayan, Shamika Bhide, Arya Ambekar and few others. Its very time consuming process of searching the videos, filtering them and putting them on blog. Hence I am doing it in parts. Unfortunately, this intro post will appear as last post and videos will come above this. Once I finish posting the videos, I'll move this post above.

Today I went to office as usual. After yesterday's massacre, fighting is still going on in South Mumbai. Despite of warning from police, I went out of my home. May be because I work at Vashi which is 40 kms away from the terror spot; may be I am fearless or just careless; or I have asked my team members to come and my boss is also here ... whatever ...

What I can do at home otherwise ? Watch same 'BREAKING NEWS' again and again ? Take rest and do nothing ? or go to terror spot and help people somehow ?

Young people with age 20-25 are carrying out such attacks. At this age, I was not even graduated. These terrorists are all set to take other people's lives without even understanding its meaning.Can you stop these people ? You can't. No one can stop them. They don't fear death hence they can do anything. I appreciate the great ability of terrorists leaders - they can market 'death'. They can encourage some one to die for something. Can any HR manager do that ?
Then how it can be stopped ? Increase security, have more spending on intelligence, defense, technology so that such attacks can be detected and prevented ? We are at War. So the solution is to win the war or prevent the war ?

While using google services, I observed something interesting:

Saw the circled thing ? Instead of my normal sign in name or my first name, it shows: http://mandar.deodhar@gmail.com.

Google reader is still with old sign in .. don't know why.

What is this ? From last few days I have read little about google is becoming an Open Id provider, then later on gmail or your blog address can be your open id etc. etc. I guess this is it. Now, you are not accessing google services using your google account, you are using Open Id to use them. And this open Id is provided by google - your gmail id with http.

Sounds confusing ? Read following information about Open Id. If you still have doubts, let me know:

Your Gmail Account is Now An OpenID

Why all this ? Now google or every site using this service knows what a user is doing somewhere else. Better user profiling so that they can show you 'targeted' ads :-)

But the benefits of using Open Id are many. If implemented properly, one can have their personal profile created on orkut, blog on wordpress,album on photobucket, online office documents using msn (live.com), mail on gmail etc. all with single sign in id to remember and link. Lets see when it will happen.

Finally I have found an interesting position for myself in finance domain - A Rocket Scientist :-) . As per wikipedia article - Financial markets, A Rocket Scientist is a slang term used for financial consultant at the zenith of mathematical and computer programming skill. They are able to invent derivatives of frightening complexity and construct sophisticated pricing models. They generally handle the most advanced computing techniques adopted by the financial markets since the early 1980s. Typically, they are physicists and engineers by training. Interesting job isn't it ;-) ?

After a careful study of context and content of the equity market, we have decided following strategy for MandY Holding Pvt. Ltd.:

Few Thoughts
- Think globally, invest locally.
- For short term investments do not care about business and actual company. Focus on numbers, trends, news and mass psychology. For long term investments - think in terms of businessman and investor both. For mid term investments, give mroe priority to events than fundamentals but do not neglect fundamentals and technical analysis.
- Read the news and read the results. But How they relate with each other must be decided by your own judgment. Do not just believe on new channel analysis as they are only good at increasing their TRP.
- Don't panic or don't be greedy. You should know when to average or when to quit. And never ever evaluate stock after you quit. Have confidence(not over confidence) in you and your analysis.

Long Term Investments - With a target more than 3 years i.e. 2011 end.
Mid term investments - With a target of one to two months.
Day Trading - The daily loss should not exceed 5% of the total amount.

Cash Flows
- Initial investment of Rs. 50,000
- Expected earning (cash out) rs. 2,000 to 3,000 per month without reducing existing 50,000 amount. That makes 25 to 30% returns per year.
- Cash available in the account should be minimum 10% and maximum 50% of the total amount at the end of the day.

Karina sent Obama a two-page handwritten letter in September, and suggested a Coton de Tulear, a small Bichon-type dog named after the city in Madagascar, for its soft cottony coat, noting that “they do not shed, they are very lovable, small and very soft.” She said she has one, named Murphy, who “is very smart and sweet.”
Obama has promised his two daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, that they can have a dog when they move in to the White House.
In a surprise reply received last Oct. 30, Obama told Karina, “Look out for other people, even when it does not directly benefit you; strive to make a difference everywhere you go; and get back up every time you are knocked down.”
Karina, a fourth grader in Missouri, told the then candidate that “I think you will make a very good president… I think that you will make wise decisions for the country.”

What a birthday gift for Jerry Yang. He is turning 40 today (6th Nov)

The last hope for Yahoo to keep Yahoo independent from Microsoft is over. Google announced they are moving away from the Yahoo-Google advertisement deal.

For those who are not aware of the history, Microsoft showed interest to buy Yahoo at $33 per share i.e. $47.5 billion total. At that time Yahoo was getting traded around $28. Yang responded with the price $37 and Microsoft refused.

To make the acquisition impossible, Yahoo made the ad sharing agreement with search giant Google. This deal was helpful for Yahoo in short term as they're getting more ads hence more revenue from Google. But in long term, they are doing nothing but sleeping with the enemy. All this is just to stay away from Microsoft.

But fate it seems, Yang has run out of options now. Google has said bye bye.

Many of the Yahoo senior executives left the ship already, others are going one by one. Share are now in 13-16$ range. Finally, Yang is now asking Microsoft to offer another deal for Yahoo. Another option can be merging with AOL, but it is again difficult due to AOL's relationship with Time Warner.

Balmer must be very happy with all this.

Microsoft is happy as the control is in their hands now. Beggars are not choosers. They are getting Yahoo at half the price than their previous offer. But considering the market situation few months before and now, Microsoft has also came down. Hence its not very easy for Microsoft as well. But with the power of money, they can do it.

What about Mr. Carl Ichan ?

He had plans to make great money with old Microsoft deal, but now being one of the major shareholder in Yahoo, he is also the part of the sinking ship.

Why all this happened ? Where exactly Yahoo went wrong ? As per my view, they did almost nothing in last 2 years compare to their competitors - Google and Microsoft. Both advanced with their own talent, research and acquisitions - power of money. Yahoo lacked on all these fronts. They also lost their talent, their senior management executives one by one which worsen the situation. This failure was well exploited by wall street to put immense pressure on Yahoo board. They failed to manage it well and made wrong decisions. Now the situation is not under their control. What they'll end up with ? Only time will tell ...

Cluture, Food, In General ...

Today I attended a family get together in Dombivali. Typical faces, hi hello stuff, introductions, pangat style food, agrah etc. etc. etc. .. upto some extent I enjoy it but sometimes it becomes boring as well. After so many days I saw lot of brahmin faces at once. Only places like girgaon, dadar, parle thane and dombivali have ample quality of brahmins left.

Me being from Ghatkopar for last 25+ years, surrounded by gujjus only. Otherwise who else will give me company on paani puri, sandwitch, dosa, juice, kulfi on roadside gaadis ? It must be all manis bhai, pares bhai, hetal, jigna, kokila ben, ramnik bhai and Baa only :-) And all baban, santos, bablu as gaadiwalas serving dishes. Paani puri wale ke paas to apnaa debit account hai. I pay him once at the begining every week and he keeps all the hisaab. Going out for coffee at late night after 12:30 is another experience. My sis gives me company most of the time. Actually its her who asks me to go out for coffee at such odd times... whatever ... Finding a coffeewala who carries coffee can on his bicycle .. waaah ...

One great food love incidence when I took my sister to maddu mess. Maddu mess is a place outside IIT campus, a small house in which a guy called maddu (dont know his real name) makes dosas. The USP is he starts his dosa making at 4:45 am and closes it at 8:30 am. And in that time almost all hungry iitians jump in there after spending whole night in their labs. Few months back when my sister was preparing for her final semester exam, I forced her to come to maddu mess once. She finished her studies by 4:30 and we took a ric to go there. I was 'highly respected' guy there as I was with a girl ;-) I told my sis not to call me mandar dada :-D . Despite of he surrounding atmosphere, the taste was awesome .. we had few idlis, medu wadas, daal wadas, onion dosas and at the end a solid tasty coffee. What a treat for my sis .. he he he ...
But due to maddu food effect my sis got 70% up for the first time in her engineering and won the fast track watch from me. This is a secret .. the reason behind great IIT brains ;-)

A New Target - GMAT

Adding another task to my already busy schedule now. Have decided to give GMAT by Q2-2010. Kept a long time to study - 2 full yrs. Lets see how much I can do. Thinking of doing PGPX or something similar in 2011.

By that time recession will be definitely over (if it ever starts ..) and world will need fresh, new great leaders at that time .. he he he .. just kidding ... Want to do something in corporate strategy. Hope I'll be able to do it.

But is it a good strategy to reveal the plans in public ?? ;-)

The dot in you username is redundant. You can place it anywhere (except starting and ending) or just remove it. All mails addresses are valid.

Just see the red marked stuff. I have sent a test mail to different addresses and all mails are delivered to my Inbox. Also, google is ready to help you out with this Help.

Hence if you are having 'n' letters in your email addresses, the nyou actually own 2^(n-1) distinct email addresses on google. Isn't that interesting ? I just accidentaly discovered it. Digged it a bit and realized its a nice feature. Helpful if you have a website where you are subscribing using trial for few days and login requires a fresh valid mail address. Now the interesting question is why google is doing this ?
My answer is, google's motto is to organize the world's information. For google - mail, blogger, orkut, reader, docs is not just a service. Your user name is a 'profile' which has behavior which can be learn by machine learning algorithm to display targeted advertisements. Removing non characters is a simplest method to do string matching. Hence it gives google a chance to unify your different profiles as one. Any more suggestions are welcome.

Few off topic stuff now .. if you look closely, you can see there is no chat box or send invites box on left side of gmail. They are redundant hence I removed them using some simple hacks. Similarly, the right side advertisements are also totally useless. There is no way I am going to click on them .. Still let them be there .. thats google's bread and butter which allows them to provide great 'g' apps for free.

For last three months I am taking lot of interest in the World of High Finance. Somehow problems, issues, disorganization, failures attract me more than success stories. Today was Black Friday for BSE. Only one script gained 6 paise rest all down. I think this is the time to step in.

Several people told me to wait as the market will go down further. I am not starting the actual investment; I'll involve my brain first, learn things, develop my logic. And by December I'll start using my DMAT account which is blank for last two years.

I am neither an investment banker nor a broker who manage huge sum of money (of others ofcourse). There is no way I can change anything. I'll be managing my small amount thats it. Do not think of investing in MANDY Holding Pvt. Ltd. It has a credit rating of ZZZ--

Thank GOD for everything I have

Today was one of the most challenging day for me on emotional front. I was just returning to normal (see my previous post) I never expected I'll ever face such situation in my life.

I request kind hearted people not to read further.

I visited an old age home - Vruddhashram in Pune and a funeral after words. We know a 'Second Innings House' from Munnabhai movie. Retired people living happily with Vidya Balan. But when we reached there, the situation was different.

I saw a 20x20 room with 8 people. All of them aging more than 70-75 years. Out of 8 people, 2 of them were in coma, 2 were unconscious, one dead for five to six hours and remaining three alive. All together in one small room.
I looked at the faces of three people who were alive. They were waiting for something to happen or someone to come or probably death. Hopelessly hopeful. Even a cold blooded, emotionally rock solid person like me collapsed .. I couldn't look at them again. We just went and took the dead body out.

In tensed, hopeless situations I use smile or humor to get out of it. I remember a statement of Pu. La. Deshpande from Antu Barva : विशाल सागारतीर् आहे, नाराळीची बने आहेत, पोफळीच्या बागा आहेत .. पण त्या उदात्त तेला दारिद्र्य असे विलक्षण छेद देऊन जातं आणि मग उरत काय .. एक भयाण विनोदाचं अभेद्य असं कवच. Humor .. It works most of the time.

But I couldn't apply that in this situation. Everything failed .. I failed .. just couldn't find a solution .. SAD...

Sometimes I feel machines are better than human beings, they don't have emotions at least .. yet.

Today's experience gave me one very positive feedback. My people. I am very fortunate to have my people around. Knowingly or unknowingly I do things for them, get positive / negative feedback. Generally we don't see the importance of it but today's experience gave me a new meaning to it.

Time to Reinstall the OS

In last few months I have installed too many programs. I feel things are now becoming unmanageable. Infinite tasks to do in finite time. Fortunately, I am very good at automation and multi tasking, still things are becoming difficult now. Its time to system clean up, install upgrades and reboot.

Mandy will be unavailable for next few hours. Unscheduled downtime .. but a must :-)

Input devices will be strictly turned off as they trigger more n more processes. I just can't stop my brain from thinking when I get some input in any form. All output must be ignored as it is not at all moderated by my kernel. Like a drunk person.

Smoking, drinking or loosing control by any other means is just out of question. That never leads to any solution. I'll probably watch first few minutes of Saving Private Ryan , Schindler's List, Swades, Enemy at the Games, Chak De, Lagaan, Independance Day, Matrix etc. Or some kiddish stuff like Home Alone, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Baby's Day Out or Jim Carrey's, Mithun or Rajani's movie.

Or I'll read biography of some scientist, their life, their devotion to the research.

May be I'll do some programming, write some code myself .. haven't written a single line in last 8-10 months :-( A new role : A solution architect is needed now. I'll redefine, optimize some of my concepts, fundamentals, processes to push my limits further.

After reinstall you'll see some new features, better response time, less lukkhagiri, more perfection .. a better Mandar Deodhar :-)

2: Government change means everything change, for me vote Bank is more important that World Bank.

Tonight, the historic nuclear deal between India and US is going to be finalized. Thanks to Indian leaders who evaluated India’s energy needs and made a decision to move ahead despite of political pressure. And thanks to US for ending 3 decade long ban to recognize India as Nuclear Power. There was opposition from both sides initially, some relatives were not happy about the relationship, but at the end all the issues are cleared and the marriage is about to happen. Both sides are happy to see it and bit concerned about the future of the relationship as well.

Marriage is just one day ceremony, but married life is for lifetime.

US now needs India as their strategic partner. Geographically, we are next to China. Pakistan is just changing sides between US and China for its own interest. Hence US needs to strenghten its position in Asia at any cost. Nuclear energy is going to be the main source of energy in next future. US and other countries have developed the expertise to produce it and they need someone to buy these things from them.

But, US is well known to follow its words; but they define new meanings for the words every time. They never do any thing for charity, everything is returns based - high returns based particularly. And they know how to make use of their resources, relationships, power for their profit. When India was away from globalization we used to get 'salary' for our work, now we get 'compensation'. All these terms are defined by global powers where US is the leader. HR - treating human as resource to get maximum out of it is an excellent example.

India is getting global recognition for the first time. We can not enjoy the real fruits of globalization in almost every sector including nuclear technologies.

But in India, more preference is given to agenda of political parties than the country growth. A ruling party decides India's strategic decisions and oppositions always oppose them. A physics term singularity means a point where everything is unpredictable, anything can happen. Here we have singurality where even Tatas also can't escape.

Hence the life after the marriage is important than just getting married. For next few months its going to be honeymoon period. But we all need to wait n watch, take care and hope for the best. After all, the marriage is a necessity at this moment for both.

Last week I had a discussion with an IT professional who heads the strategy division at one of the leading infotech company. We discussed lot of topics but main was IT industry boom in last 2 years.

Booming time .. freshers getting job offers one to two years before finishing their education, experienced getting 20 to 50% hike with new offers, several 'agents' from job consultancy companies etc etc etc ... But all of a sudden things are looking different now. In last 3-4 months market is slowing down. Though every one knows its a business and there are ups and downs, there are few points which one must consider this time. Its not the case of 99-2000 where people had just enthusiasm than proper plans. But this slowdown has its own problems.

For any mid or large size software company, there are several people working at various levels with different job profiles. Their salaries, work is as per their talent, market conditions, industry standards and company policies. Overall its a pyramid in which freshers, new joiners forming a bottom most level with large mass; then module leaders, team leaders, project managers, department heads, management executives etc. Salary wise also, the structure is a pyramid. In case of booming market conditions such structure starts shaking a bit. Companies lure people by offering them higher salaries and hire more people at various level. When companies add people at bottom most level, automatically, employees present at that level are moved up. The overall pyramid structure remains as it is due to this pushing up but the talent required by an individual at that level is not checked all the time. In booming time, such activities are not noticed, as there are more projects, more 'billable' resources are required and company gains from client for that.

But when booming time stops and projects become scarce, these people become real difficulty for any company. They are already at much higher salary than their talent. They are moved up just because there were people under them and not based on their talent or leadership skills. After a certain point, an individual is expected to handle more responsibility of work than doing actual work. One must be able to emerge as a great manager, leader. Developing this quality is not at all easy as it requires combination of talent, skills and experience. Hence most of these people at this stage become redundant in the company and ultimately given pink slip.

Now what these people should do ? They definitely have experience, knowledge and skills. But after that the next expected level is leadership which not everyone can develop. These people can then work as a freelancer and use their expertise. They can use their technical knowledge to help other companies. Being a freelancer, they are always available and companies do not need to feed them when there are no projects. Many people are already doing that. This will become the culture in IT industry soon. Lets see how this economic slowdown affects its timeline.

Today I accidentally left my phone on my desk and went to canteen. After 5 minutes one of my colleague found me and told me that your phone was ringing on desk. He asked - you have some dhagala lagli kala type song as your ring tone right ?
I was surprised .. I am having a very nice ring tone of kalat nakalat serial title song. What he is saying ? He was referring to my phone only. He is non maharashtrian. He told me for him all marathi songs are dhagala lagli kala only.

Oye ??? Kuch bhi !!!!

I don't expect him to understand the difference between sugam sangeet and bhakti sangeet but at least one should understand something like kombadi palali and kaataa rute kunaalaa ...

आटपाट नगर होतं. तिथे एक बंड्या जोशी नावाचा मुलगा रहायचा आई-बाबांसोबत. बंड्याचे चिमखडे बोल सगळ्यांना खूप खूप आवडायचे. त्यामुळे झालं काय की बंड्याला वाटायला लागलं आपण लय भारी बोलतो. पण बंड्या ४ वर्षाचा झाला तरी अजून बोबडंच बोलत होता. त्यामुळे आई रागावली. तर बंड्याला वाटलं ती बोलूच नको असं म्हणतेय. त्यामुळे "जा आता मी तुझ्याशी बोलणारच नाही" असं आईला म्हणून तो गप्प बसला.

आणि एके दिवशी त्याच्या लक्षात आलं की आपल्यावर अन्याय होतोय. आणि मग त्याने आई-बाबांच्या विरुद्ध बंड करायचं ठरवलं.

जेवताना त्याने पाहिलं आई आपल्याल दोनच पोळ्या देते पण बाबांना मात्र ४-५ मिळतात. म्हणून त्याने एकदा आईला विचारलं असं का? आई म्हणाली अरे बाबा मोठे आहेत म्हणून त्यांना जास्त पोळ्या. पण ह्या उत्तराने बंड्याचे काही समाधान झाले नाही. "जा आता मी तुझ्याशी बोलणारच नाही" असं आईला म्हणून तो गप्प बसला.

पण दुसर्‍या दिवशी पुन्हा आईच्या मागे लागला "बाबांना फुल पँट नी मला हाफ चड्डी का?" आई नी पुन्हा समजावलं की ते मोठे आहेत म्हणून. पण तरीही बंड्याचे समाधान झाले नाही. आई ने पुन्हा समजावलं "अरे बंड्या तुझ्याच्यानी २ पोळ्याही संपत नाहीत आणि तू अजून शाळेतही जात नाही. मग तुला काय करायच्यात ५ पोळ्या नी फुल पँट?" तरी बंड्याचं समाधान झालं नाही. "जा आता मी तुझ्याशी बोलणारच नाही" असं आईला म्हणून तो गप्प बसला.

तिसर्‍या दिवशी त्याच्या असं लक्षात आलं की बाबांना यायला आज-काल उशीर होतोय. त्याने पुन्हा आईला विचारलं "आई बाबा बॉसला रागावत का नाहीत? संप का करत नाहित?" त्यावर आई म्हणाली अरे काम केलं की प्रमोशन मिळतं, प्रमोशन मिळालं की पगार वाढतो, पगार वाढला तरच आपल्याला सुखा समाधानात जगता येइल.

ह्यावर पुन्हा बंड्याने डोकं चालवलं. म्हणाला "म्हणजे माझ्या मुळे आपल्याला सुखा समाधानात जगता येइल." ह्यावर आई चक्रावून गेली. काम करतात बाबा, घर सांभाळते मी, हा अजून शाळेतही जात नाही नी वर म्हणतो माझ्यामुळे आपल्याला सुखा समाधानात जगता येइल. आईने विचारलं कसं काय?

तर त्यावर बंड्या म्हणाला "अगं, जर मी आक्रस्ताळे पणे वागू लागलो तर बाबांचं कामात लक्ष लागेल का? कामात लक्ष लागलं नाही तर नोकरी जाईल आणि बाबांची नोकरी गेली की आपण सगळे रस्त्यावर येऊ. त्यामुळे मी जरी दिवसभर घरी खेळत असलो नी बाबा काम करत असले तरी मी नी बाबा समानच. उलट मीच जास्त महत्वाचा." आईला हसू आले पण तिने ते कसे बसे थांबवले.

बंड्या पुढे म्हणाला "आता तू घर आवरतेस कबूल. पण मी दिवसभर घरात पसारा करायचे ठरवले तर तू कितीही आवरून काय उपयोग? त्यामुळे तू घर आवरतेस ह्या पेक्षा मी मुद्दामून पसारा करत नाही हे जास्त महत्वाचे." आई ने पुन्हा हसू आवरले.

आई ने मग विचार केला की इतके दिवस तर बंड्या शहाण्या सारखा वागत होता, अचानक काय झाले त्याल. विचार केल्यावर तिच्या लक्षात आलं की आज काल बंड्याचं कुणी कौतूक करेनासं झालंय. जे बोबडे बोल लोकांना आवडायचे ते बंड्या मोठा झाल्याने आवडेनासे झालेत. त्यामुळे बंड्या विचित्र वागून लोकांचं लक्ष वेधून घेण्याचा प्रयत्न करतोय. हे आईला कळल्यावर आई मनातल्या मनात हसली.

संध्याकाळी आईनी बाबांना बंड्याचे उपद्व्याप सांगितले. बाबांनी बंड्याल कोपर्‍यात अंगठे धरून ओणवं उभं केलं. बंड्या आई वर पुन्हा रागावला. "जा आता मी तुझ्याशी बोलणारच नाही" असं आईला पुन्हा एकदा म्हणून तो पुन्हा गप्प बसला. आई मनातल्या मनात पुन्हा हसली.

तात्पर्य - जसं अ ब क ड लिहीता आल्यने कुणी वाल्मीकी होत नाही तसंच बोबडं बोलता आल्याने कुणी तानसेन होत नाही.

The Future of Physics

Just returned from the heaven ... for last 2 weeks I am spending almost 5-6 hours per day (apart from my office work) studying modern physics :). Physics is my hobby starting from 11th standard. Didn't get much time to read more in last few years, but recent news about The Large Hadron Collider brought me back to the topics which once fascinated me a lot. In last two weeks, I went through lots of material, books, articles, maths etc. whatever I found related to the topic.

Let me just write down what I understood from it. Don't know how many of you are following these news. At least some of you might have heard something happening in Europe which can change future of physics, unveil hidden secrets of Universe, provide unlimited source of energy or possibly destroy earth entirely. This is all about Large Hadron Collider or LHC experiment being carried out at the Swiss and French borders on the outskirts of Geneva. I am not a physics Guru hence do not expect any core technical stuff and my interpretation can be wrong.

What exactly is LHC? It is a long magnetic tunnel (27 km long) built underground to accelerate small subatomic particles (e.g. protons, electrons etc.) to the speed of light and make them collide with each other. It uses magnetic filed to increase their velocity and control their direction. The collision is captured by several 150 MegaPixel cameras which are capable of taking snapshots 600 million times per second - kya solid detailed film hogi yeh :-). These reports will be analyzed by scientists to study the creation, life span, decay of several other subatomic particles produced during the collision.

Now lets talk about why are they doing this and how it is related to future of physics. The history of physics is very old right from ancient indian vedas, greeks, roman structures etc. But it got mathematical foundation in 16th century when Galileo and Newton provided laws of physics. Those laws were perfect to explain day to day situations. But when scientists applied those laws to study events happening at very large scale such as measurements of orbits and galaxies, they found problems. Also, when we try to peep into the atom and try apply these rules at atomic scale, there are lots of inconsistencies. Hence from the beginning of the 20th century physicist developed theories such as relativity, quantum mechanics, string theory etc. Those theories were great at standalone level but when people try to combine them, it resulted into problems. Hence scientists were looking for a unified theory which will answer all their doubts.

Scientists have proposed lot of theories but they are not able to prove them without lack of actual observations. This experiment is going to create a state which was present at the beginning of the universe, probably first few seconds of the universe. Colliding two high speed protons will result in creation of different particles which we have not seen yet. It will also produce black holes for a very small period. No one knows exactly what :-) hence everyone is watching it.

Some .. esp. media is creating hype that this experiment can destroy earth entirely because the black hole created will suck the entire earth in it. Well, as a layman with basic understanding of physics can also tell that this is not going to happen .. even if it is .. the probability is very very low so that it can be neglected.

Some people are raising concerns over the budget spend for the experiment. $8 billion. With no guaranteed success. This money could have been used for humanitarian aid projects, against terrorism etc. But I personally feel development of science is also very important for the development of mankind. Involvement of basic science is going to drive technology which will ultimately make human life better.

This experiment also suggested that there is going to be decentralization of scientific development efforts from US to another parts in the world. This project involves lots of countries including India.

Finally, one more thing comes into mind is, what if this experiment discovers something evil ? say a powerful bomb which is better than H-bomb or FFF bomb which can be built easily such that even terrorists can built it ? No one knows. The development of science is twofold .. its up to us how we use it.

9/11, Terrorism and War

September 11, 2001; the mighty USA was attacked by terrorist Osama Bin Laden. 7 years are gone now. Lots of equations got changed. USA got chance to attack any country in the world at will. They did and we are seeing the results. Countries like Afghanistan, Iraq are destroyed under the name 'War on Terror' and 'War for Freedom' etc.

I am not a sadist, but WAR is one of my favorite topic. Here, I am trying to relate Terrorism and War.

In past, battles were only limited to battlefield, fought between armies. In the ancient times civilians were affected only while looting the enemy cities after victory. But from 19th century war reached to the normal civilians. Starting with bombing enemy cities, industries till Atom bomb explosion. In 20th century we saw the worst form of it - terrorism. War is at our doorsteps now. Terrorism is just another form of war. Countries or group of people who can not fight directly opt this way. Now my question is: Is it ethical to involve civilians in War ?

Why to involve civilians in the war ? They do not fight in the war. Many times they are completely unaware of the situation and don't even know why it is happening. Its a decision of top level politicians, military generals which is forced on normal citizens. Why someone wants to get into war situations by putting their family life in danger ? Aren't there any other problems in day to day life to fight for ? War disturbs everything. First, it affects moral, psychological balance which leads to several complications. Will you be able to work with your full potential if you are unsure of your family wellness at home ? Is it ethical to kill small children, women, old age citizens just because they belong to your enemy country ? After all they are also human beings like you are. How good is winning the territory after destroying everything ?

The other side of the coin says .. why not ? Aren't these people building economy which supports war ? Increasing moral of armies fighting on front ? Any one of them can become suicide bomber and bounce back. So why leave them. its war .. and everything is fair in Love and War. if their country has started the war, they should also suffer. Finally they are also the ones who'll enjoy fruits of victory. Killing civilians brings down moral of the troops which can help in wining the War. Atomic bomb explosion ended WW2 isn't it ?

That is the exact principle behind terrorism. Terrorists are not directly attacking troops. In fact, they are not capable of doing it. hence they are attacking normal people, trying to win the war on moral grounds. It is a new strategy .. but it is very effective. And unfortunately, we all are at the receiving end of it. Who knows, tomorrow, we may need to face a radioactive dirty bomb or a chemical or biological weapon attack. Terrorism can reach to any extremity.

Lets see how mankind survives from this threat. Is there any end or a possible solution ?

Today I went to my landlord to renew my house rent agreement. He agreed for one year extension. I asked whats the cost if I want to buy it. Calmly, he said the current rate has gone to rs. 9,000+ per sq feet. Our area is 1100 sq feet hence the grand total is 1,00,00,000 .. yup .. its complete 1 CRORE ... huh !!!

I smiled and came back, told my parents. We just coudn't stop laughing after that. 1 Crore ??? At Ghatkopar West .. not Pedder road or Band Stand or something ..

It gave me a very positive feeling. If Amitabh Bachhan asks "Kaun Banega Karodpati ?" then I will answer - "I Am ... for next 14 months atleast. Living in 1 crore house" :)

Now I can dream to take house next to Shahrukh Khan's Mannat. I have seen one old building near his house. The building is in very poor condition. I'll buy it and keep it's name 'Marammat' :)
